Up Next: What Should I Do If My Tree Roots Are Damaged?
It is normal to have questions about Hansen’s organic mulch, especially if you are a first time user or new to gardening or landscaping. We are here to help answer the most essential questions about organic mulch and its uses:
How Do I Apply Hansen’s Organic Mulch?
Applying Hansen’s organic mulch is easy! We recommend applying mulch 1-2 inches deep and spread evenly throughout the landscape. You want to make sure that there is enough mulch on the top to help retain moisture but not too much that root rot, overheating, and pests take root. Be sure to mix up the old mulch from last year with the new and remember not to apply mulch too early! Wait until after a hard frost in the fall and the last hard frost of the spring.
What Is A Mulch Volcano & How Can I Avoid Them?
Say you have a tree or a shrub. When you pile mulch up around the trunk of the tree, this is called a mulch volcano. Mulch volcanoes need to be avoided, piling a lot of material around the trunk can kill the plant. As you look across the landscape, your mulch should be even. Leave about 2 inches around the base of the trunk free of mulch.
Is My Hansen’s Organic Mulch From Last Year Still Good?
It depends. Each year, you should rake around older mulch to check the depth and aerate the layers. If the mulch is still 2-4 inches deep, you may not need to add more mulch. Adding more when it is not needed can cause excess moisture, heat, or air barriers that would be detrimental to the health of your trees and landscaping.

How Is Hansen’s Organic Mulch Made?
Hanen’s organic mulch is made at our local facility from green waste generated from jobs in the St. Louis area. We let nothing go to waste and the process has strict regulations to ensure that it is safe for the environment. Our dyed mulch is non-toxic and will hold its color for up to six months.
Why Should I Get Hansen’s Organic Mulch? Aren’t Rubber Chips Just As Good?
Rubber chips are what is known as inorganic mulch. This option does not break down like organic mulch and if they do break down, it cannot be recycled. Hansen’s organic mulch is made from green waste generated from landscaping jobs, keeping green waste out of local landfills and providing a safe way to protect and feed your plants year-round. Organic mulch continues to break down and turn into organic material and continue to feed. Inorganic mulch does not.
